One Love by Amanda Shofner

From Goodreads:

Be witness to the evolution of a relationship . . .

One night for it to begin

When Tony Aguilar hires Andrea “Drea” DeMatteo, he’s willing to do just about anything to get a good night’s rest—including paying a woman money to spend the night, no sex involved. And Drea can’t afford to turn down Tony’s offer, no matter how bizarre it seems. But when the two meet, the potential for more takes them both by surprise.

One year for trouble to brew

All is not well in paradise. Time has passed, things have changed. Tony wants them to change even more. But when Tony’s mother drops by for a visit—a surprise to Drea, not Tony—the omission leads Drea on a journey she never thought she’d take. And it’s a journey that teaches Tony just what Drea means to him.

One lifetime for their love

Happily ever after may be in Tony and Drea’s future, as long as their secrets don’t get in the way.

One Love is a great little romance where the set up is just enough, and you jump right into the feels! Amanda is great at making you care for her characters right out of the gate! I have to admit that I am a real sucker for the damaged hero story and I just wanted to hug Tony from the get go. He is such a good guy, and really needs help. While his method seems a little unorthodox, it pulls at your heartstrings and you want Drea to love him right away, because it's just what they both need. I like that we get the beginning, middle and end all together here in One Love, it's short but satisfying, and it was just what I needed in between the more serious reads I've had recently.

Tony and Drea's friends Mel and Ian are fun too, and I do hope we're able to get their story some day. they have a lot personality just in the small glimpses we get of them.  I want more!

You can check it out on Kindle for $1.99 here:  One Love

The Viscount's Christmas Temptation by Erica Ridley

The Viscount's Christmas Temptation (The Dukes of War, #1)The Viscount's Christmas Temptation by Erica Ridley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Very cute and just what I needed for a quick Christmas read. I finished it early this morning while trying to get sleepy after some Christmas Day prep, it was perfect timing!

Amelia is a great character, and there isn't anything she can't organize into submission, including Viscount Benedict! She has a Christmas plan that depends on his agreement, and she isn't giving him a choice. She brings him around to her way of thinking exactly as expected, but he has a few tricks of his own for her to crack that iron clad planning.

A recommend from me if you're looking for a light, quick, seasonal, historical romance.

A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain

From Goodreads:

Beautiful and brilliant, Kendra Donovan is a rising star at the FBI. Yet her path to professional success hits a speed bump during a disastrous raid where half her team is murdered, a mole in the FBI is uncovered and she herself is severely wounded. As soon as she recovers, she goes rogue and travels to England to assassinate the man responsible for the deaths of her teammates.

While fleeing from an unexpected assassin herself, Kendra escapes into a stairwell that promises sanctuary but when she stumbles out again, she is in the same place - Aldrich Castle - but in a different time: 1815, to be exact.

Mistaken for a lady's maid hired to help with weekend guests, Kendra is forced to quickly adapt to the time period until she can figure out how she got there; and, more importantly, how to get back home. However, after the body of a young girl is found on the extensive grounds of the county estate, she starts to feel there's some purpose to her bizarre circumstances. Stripped of her twenty-first century tools, Kendra must use her wits alone in order to unmask a cunning madman.

I joined in the Big Library Read this round for A Murder in Time.  Time travel, historical fiction, a serial killer, it sounded interesting, and I'm glad to say it was!  It was kind of like Downton Abbey meets CSI.  It seems far fetched that anyone would have paid heed to Kendra's knowledge of a serial killer's reasoning, but that is smoothed over with The Duke, who is a bit eccentric himself, and willing to be open minded when others are not. I really enjoyed his character and would have liked to spend a little more time with him and his interests and hobbies in the story.  I also liked the lynch pin that belief in her story rested on for Alec, but I don't want to spoil that tidbit for anyone.

A Murder in Time was historically interesting, fast paced and kept me guessing!  I really wasn't sure who the murderer was. I'm glad to see that there is another book in the series coming next spring, to continue Kendra's story.

The Master Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

From Goodreads:

Throughout her studies, Ceony Twill has harbored a secret, one she’s kept from even her mentor, Emery Thane. She’s discovered how to practice forms of magic other than her own — an ability long thought impossible.

While all seems set for Ceony to complete her apprenticeship and pass her upcoming final magician’s exam, life quickly becomes complicated. To avoid favoritism, Emery sends her to another paper magician for testing, a Folder who despises Emery and cares even less for his apprentice. To make matters worse, a murderous criminal from Ceony’s past escapes imprisonment. Now she must track the power-hungry convict across England before he can take his revenge. With her life and loved ones hanging in the balance, Ceony must face a criminal who wields the one magic that she does not, and it may prove more powerful than all her skills combined.

I read this as a Kindle Unlimited selection and really enjoyed the whole trilogy! I love the magic system that the author has created, with the paper folding and the glass, and other elements, and was really able to visualize Ceony's work in her different lessons, with the ability to bring origami creatures to a semblance of life.  It was delightful!

I love both Ceony and Emery, their personalities and their relationship, and Emery's complex creations, which I won't mention because I don't want to spoil anything.  I feel bad that I'm only reviewing the third book, in case you haven't read the others, so I'm going to be very general and not really discuss plot.

I will say that Ceony always seems to plunge headlong into trouble, after being warned to stay out of it, but in her defense, they always seem to ignore her worries, which turn out to be worth listening to.  On the whole I felt this whole trilogy was very engaging and enjoyable, I was very pleased with the ending, and after reading the first book, I did go check out some origami books from the library because I was just in the mood to make something! lol!  I didn't end up getting around to it, but the desire was there!

I highly recommend the Paper Magician Trilogy as a fun, fairly quick fantasy read.  I believe these would be good read-a-thon fare as all three are around 220 pages each and move at a good pace.

Updraft by Fran Wilde

From Goodreads:

In a city of living bone rising high above the clouds, where danger hides in the wind and the ground is lost to legend, a young woman must expose a dangerous secret to save everyone she loves.

Welcome to a world of wind and bone, songs and silence, betrayal and courage.

Kirit Densira cannot wait to pass her wingtest and begin flying as a trader by her mother's side, being in service to her beloved home tower and exploring the skies beyond. When Kirit inadvertently breaks Tower Law, the city's secretive governing body, the Singers, demand that she become one of them instead. In an attempt to save her family from greater censure, Kirit must give up her dreams to throw herself into the dangerous training at the Spire, the tallest, most forbidding tower, deep at the heart of the City.

As she grows in knowledge and power, she starts to uncover the depths of Spire secrets. Kirit begins to doubt her world and its unassailable Laws, setting in motion a chain of events that will lead to a haunting choice, and may well change the city forever - if it isn't destroyed outright.

Updraft was the June read in a Goodreads group I'm a member of called The Sword and Laser. It was an interesting world of bone towers rising above the clouds, where the primary method of transportation is for individuals to fly using what sounds like a type of hanglider contraption but with more detailed movement.  The picture above looks much larger and more framed than what is described in the book, in my opinion.  Not everyone flies, there are some bridges between towers, and there are flying traders that take goods between towers, of which Kirit's mother is one.  Kirit dreams of being like, and flying with her mother as a trader, but that is not to be, her fate lies elsewhere with other talents.

The structure of this world just brings up so many questions to me.  The bone is living, it grows, it fills in the lower spaces, the Singers can coax it to grow on the top of the towers, adding new living tiers.  So that hints at something very large living below the clouds that these bone towers, spires/spines? are a part of, doesn't it?  They are fairly sturdy, but they do sometimes break, toppling those who live there out of the sky, most likely to their deaths, what other outcome could there be?  What came about to cause a people to live that way?  I hope we learn more in the next book!

I liked Kirit, she knew exactly what she wanted, and it wasn't unreasonable.  The problem was there were so many secrets and past events stacked against her, she really had no chance of realizing her goals.  She was presented with many difficult dilemmas for young adult, and it seemed like the odds were constantly against her.  Sometimes the decisions she made were very unpleasant, in trying for the greater good, and there was a lot of weight on her shoulders.

Overall an interesting read with a very different structure of world, good characters and a plot full of intrigue.  I'm looking forward to the next book, Cloudbound, due out in September of this year.

Night Shift by Charlaine Harris

From Goodreads:

At Midnight’s local pawnshop, weapons are flying off the shelves—only to be used in sudden and dramatic suicides right at the main crossroads in town.

Who better to figure out why blood is being spilled than the vampire Lemuel, who, while translating mysterious texts, discovers what makes Midnight the town it is. There’s a reason why witches and werewolves, killers and psychics, have been drawn to this place.

And now they must come together to stop the bloodshed in the heart of Midnight. For if all hell breaks loose—which just might happen—it will put the secretive town on the map, where no one wants it to be...

I am so sad to be saying goodbye to the residents of Midnight, Texas in this last book of the trilogy! I feel like we'd just really warmed up to them all, their quirks, their secrets, their abilities, and now it's over! A lot happens in this third book, most of it very spoilery if you haven't read the first two. There is a lot of big weirdness, some big reveals that I really didn't see coming, and while I did enjoy Night Shift, I really feel like it could have been made into a longer series that explored the characters more. Each book was successively more paranormal than the last as each of the residents is revealed for what they are, or what they can do.  Some you start out knowing and their talents grow or develop in different ways, some wait until near the end to show themselves in their glory, though you begin to suspect earlier on.

While I have a few personal criticisms of the plot, I really am sorry to see it end, and you know that when you feel that way, it was a good story, with well developed characters that have come to life.  There were character crossovers with Harris' other series, Manfred from the Harper Connelly series (probably my favorite of her stories), and I suspect Lemuel's associates may have appeared in the Sookie Stackhouse series though I'm only a few books in, so it's possible we'll see some of Midnight's townfolk again somewhere down the line.  Hope springs eternal!

Nefertiti's Heart (Artifact Hunters #1) by A. W. Exley

From Goodreads:

Cara Devon has always suffered curiosity and impetuousness, but tangling with a serial killer might cure that. Permanently.

1861. Cara has a simple mission in London – finalise her father’s estate and sell off his damned collection of priceless artifacts. Her plan goes awry when a killer stalks the nobility, searching for an ancient Egyptian relic rumoured to hold the key to immortality.

Nathaniel Trent, known as the villainous viscount, is relentless in his desire to lay his hands on both Cara and the priceless artifacts. His icy exterior and fiery touch stirs Cara’s demons, or could he lay them to rest?

Self-preservation fuels Cara’s search for the gem known as Nefertiti’s Heart. In a society where everyone wears a mask to hide their true intent, she needs to figure out who to trust, before she sacrifices her own heart and life.

I'm a sucker for anything remotely Egyptian or Archaeology themed, so the term artifact hunter in the series title of course perks my little ears up! It means exciting finds and adventure, (I know the reality is usually far different, but in novels it means exciting finds and adventure! Just go with me here...) which Nefertiti's Heart delivers, with the promise of a whole series of same! Yay!

Our heroine is a tough rogue of a young lady who is tired of getting knocked down by life and is determined to live on her own terms now, exacting a bit of a revenge for her bad treatment at the same time. We have a charming, maybe good heart-ed but definitely dangerous love interest for our Miss Devon, who might be our bad guy, or might not, we aren't sure. We have a highly sought after artifact steeped in mythological lore and promising immortal life! What more could we need?! More adventures of course!

This was a fun and colorful adventure with great characters that I really enjoyed. Lucky for me, a friend has recently gifted me with several more in the series, so I'm all ready to go!

Read for Winter 2015 #COYER

Loose Ends (Mary O'Reilly #1) - Terri Reid

From Goodreads:

Dying is what changed Mary O’Reilly’s life. Well, actually, coming back from the dead and having the ability to communicate with ghosts is really what did it.

Now, a private investigator in rural Freeport, Illinois, Mary’s trying to learn how to incorporate her experience as a Chicago cop and new-found talent into a real job. Her challenge is to solve the mysteries, get real evidence (a ghost’s word just doesn’t hold up in court), and be sure the folks in town, especially the handsome new police chief, doesn’t think she’s nuts.

Twenty-four years ago, a young woman drowned in the swimming pool of a newly elected State Senator. It was ruled an accident. But now, as the Senator prepares to move on to higher positions, the ghost of the woman is appearing to the Senator’s wife.

Mary is hired to discover the truth behind the death. She unearths a connection between the murder and the disappearance of five little girls whose cases, twenty-four years later, are still all unsolved. As she digs further, she becomes the next target for the serial killers’ quest to tie up all his loose ends.

Loose Ends starts with a bang, and a few thumps, as Mary's character and lifestyle are established right off the bat!  Poor thing is a beacon for the dead with unresolved issues, so it's a good thing she's a tough gal because being constantly approached by those that have passed on, often not gracefully, is not for the weak of heart.

This was a good paranormal mystery, quick paced and interesting, with some humor and some eerieness, though we're firmly on the side of getting these poor souls some help, even ready to cheer when they are able to help themselves and get some well-deserved justice.  Bradley the new chief of police and Mary's friends Rosie and Stanley are likable characters, rounding out this great start to a series.

I'm looking forward to seeing what interesting investigations Mary is drawn into next and want to know what the resolution to Bradley's life mystery will be.  I'm sure Rosie and Stanley will be right there as Mary's accomplices as well!

Traitor's Masque by Kenley Davidson (Giveaway)

From Goodreads:

Eighteen-year-old Trystan Colbourne believes she has nothing to lose. Her father has died, her stepmother has stolen her inheritance, and her stepsisters are as vicious as they are beautiful. If she wants a future beyond their cruelty and indifference, she has just one chance to make it for herself—by accepting an enticing offer from an unexpected benefactor. The offer? A life of freedom in exchange for her part in a harmless deception.

Trystan hopes her freedom will give her the chance to find out whether her mysterious new friend Donevan can be trusted with her secrets… and her heart. But trust is a dangerous business, and when her harmless deception turns sinister, Trystan discovers that trusting the wrong person may have placed the entire kingdom of Andar in grave peril. Unwittingly embroiled in espionage, treason, and deadly intrigue, Trystan will be forced to decide who she really wants to be, and how high a price she’s willing to pay to make her dreams come true.

This is not just a Cinderella re-telling. The traditional fairy tale plot line is the driver for Trystan's big decision, but there is so much more to this story than that. Our heroine must grapple with putting what she knows is right, not just over what she wants, but ultimately over her own freedom from an oppressive life, no small thing.  She becomes a changed person in the process, but once decided, never wavers.

The main characters are fully fleshed out and likable, their banter together is fun, further rounding their personalities.  I definitely rooted for them, and enjoyed the supporting characters as well.  As a debut novel I think this was great, and I'm looking forward to more from Kenley Davidson!

It's been awhile since I've done a giveaway, and I think Traitor's Masque is perfect for it!  I would love to share this story by giving away a kindle copy for another reader to enjoy.  That reader could be you!

Claus: Legend of the Fat Man by Tony Bertauski

From Goodreads:

Some legends are forged in fire.
Others are born in snow.

In the early 1800s, Nicholas, Jessica and Jon Santa attempt the first human trek to the North Pole and stumble upon an ancient race of people left over from the Ice Age. They are short, fat and hairy. They slide across the ice on scaly soles and carve their homes in the ice that floats on the Arctic Ocean.

The elven are adapted to life in the extreme cold.

They are as wise as they are ancient. Their scientific advancements have yielded great inventions -- time-stopping devices and gravitational spheres that build living snowmen and genetically-modified reindeer that leap great distances. They’ve even unlocked the secrets to aging. For 40,000 years, they have lived in peace.

Until now.

An elven known as The Cold One has divided his people. He’s tired of their seclusion and wants to conquer the world. Only one elven stands between The Cold One and total chaos. He’s white-bearded and red-coated. The Santa family will help him stop The Cold One.

They will come to the aid of a legendary elven known as… Claus.

I know, it's a little late, or early, to be reviewing a holiday book, but I'm FINALLY getting around to writing it up!

I have mixed feelings on this one. I had friends who rated it highly, so maybe that made my expectations too great going in. You don't really get very many holiday fantasy reads, and that is how I would classify this, so that is a point in it's favor. I did like the Reindeer and Frosty, and the manifestation of traditional Christmas ideas into an almost sci-fi setting. Even though it took place here on earth, the technology level of the elven far surpassed the humans, as you can tell just from the blurb above. The plot was fine, I think what I really didn't like was Jack. I know he had to be awful, that was his role in the story, but his constant yelling and childish desires with a ruler's power behind them were annoying, even though I realize that was the point. He was a child throwing a continuous tantrum and it was tiring to me. Now, he does have a plausible reason for being the way he is, but I wonder if we didn't start getting into that too late for me, because I was already done with him by then. He was just too over the top.

I do recommend it if you're looking for some holiday reading, especially fantasy, since most of what it is out there is romance and cozy mysteries. I'm not sure if I'll be continuing the series, we'll see if I'm in the mood around the holidays. I gave this one a 3/5.

This was my first read for the winter edition of COYER.

The Dalai Lama's Cat and the Art of Purring by David Michie

The Dalai Lama's Cat and the Art of PurringThe Dalai Lama's Cat and the Art of Purring by David Michie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really love the Dalai Lama's Cat books, they'll definitely be considered as repeat comfort reading at some point in the future. They are gently humorous and thoughtful, bringing to light concepts that we all struggle with and offering insight into how to deal with feelings in perhaps a different way than we normally would. It makes me want to visit McLeod Ganj, and the Himalayan Book Cafe, and spend time with all the endearing characters that are a part of HHC's life. It's also stirred an interest in learning more about Buddhism for me, it seems like such a peaceful and caring life philosophy, that even if you don't adopt it as a religion, you can still learn so much about human nature from it's teachings. I'm definitely looking forward to The Dalai Lama's Cat and the Power of Meow and may look into other of David Michie's books on meditation, which is a complete mystery to me. I wouldn't even know where to start.

A strong recommend to cat lovers, because regardless of whose cat she is, HHC is still A CAT, and her contemplation of the wisdom imparted by His Holiness and the other teachers which is often at odds with her nature is both entertaining and thought provoking, but in an easy way. These are light, but meaningful in content, and for me definitely comfort reading.

COYER SH #55 - features an animal prominently in the story.

Rogue Angel: Destiny by Alex Archer (Mel Odom)

From Goodreads:

An ancient order tied to the Vatican . . . A blood fortune buried in the caves of France . . . A conspiracy of power, greed and darkest evil . . .

Archaeologist and explorer Annja Creed's fascination with the myths and mysteries of the past leads her to a crypt in the caves of France, where the terrifying legend of the Beast of Gevaudin hints at the unimaginable. What she discovers is shattering: an artifact that will seal her destiny: a brotherhood of monks willing to murder to protect their secret; and a powerful black-market occultist desperate to put his own claim to centuries-old blood money. Annja embarks on a high-tension race across Europe and history itself, intent on linking the unholy treachery of the ages with the staggering revelations of the present. But she must survive the shadow figures determined to silence her threat to their existence.

I've been meaning to start this series for awhile and Bout of Books 14 and the COYER Scavenger Hunt gave me the perfect opportunity! I love Archaeology themed reads, especially combined with adventure, so this fit the bill perfectly. It was equal parts interesting and fun as our intrepid heroine works to fund what she considers her real work by doing pieces for a History's Monsters show, without losing her top! She's not the only one looking for the Beast of Gevaudin, but she is the one destined to solve the mystery, and gain a whole new set of responsibilities for herself in the process. There are bad guys, there are maybe good guys, who may also be bad guys, or not, time will tell. Annja is a no-nonsense lady, and she's going to do everything on her own terms. There are actually two historical mysteries intertwined in this story, I'm not sure I really understand why the connection between them happened, if I missed some explanation or if it was just a coincidence but it was still intriguing enough I'm ready for more. Roux is a good supporting character, especially now that his life's quest appears to have been resolved, he's kind of along for the ride and a wild card, with his long time motivation no longer driving him, will he stay with Annja or go his own way?

The next book leads Annja and Roux after a Biblical artifact, always a controversial theme and guaranteed to bring out the bad guys! I do recommend this for fans of the archeological thriller looking for a fun and fast read.
